The State Pollution Control Board, Sikkim (SPCB Sikkim), on April 2026, issued a public notice regarding management and disposal of solid waste at source in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, effective from April 1, 2026.
The notice mandates all waste generators, including households, commercial establishments, institutions, and bulk generators, to ensure segregation of solid waste at source into four categories—dry waste, wet waste, sanitary waste, and special care waste. It also prohibits disposal of waste through littering, burning, burying, or discharging into drains and water bodies.
Further, sanitary and special care waste must be deposited at designated collection centres established by local bodies. Non-compliance with these provisions may attract fines and strict action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
